Statement

My works conjure up my connections to places in nature and human built environments, exploring themes of transformation, continuity, and randomness via abstraction. I make oil paintings and mixed media drawings, and integrate my saved paint palettes and paint rags on textiles across disciplines such as embroidery, rughooking, block printing, collage, and sculptures.

I am inspired by the ever-changing formations of the waters, the sky and the land as well as the architectural details that, over time, grow into a space of obscurity prone to many possibilities. When I am outside, I am intentionally mindful of the physical shifts in the sky, on the earth and in the water. No matter how meaningful or significant I observe these phenomena to be, they change quickly, to reappear in new form. This signals a cycle of hope. What is attractive to me is the unnoticed and its potential to evoke wonder, vulnerability and creativity.

I randomly reference structural views as line work, gestural washes, paint residues, angles, shapes, patterns and fragments by making loose tracings based on the photographs I take. Tracing enables me to bring a current interpretation to the dissipating past and fickle memory. In my compositions, then, new meanings emerge intuitively, through rotating, repeating, and maneuvering, via the mediums of oil paint, watercolor, colored pencil, gouache, thread, yarn, archival markers and pens. Creating variations of the past and memories this way, allows me to further explore limitless new territories, textures and forms.
