Statement
The images I have submitted for your flat file program are from my most recent body of work, Electricity and Magnetism. These drawings are inspired by my background in physics and by my experiences of becoming a mother, first in an era of pandemic and then again in an era of extremely limited reproductive autonomy.
Imagery of butterflies, profiles in silhouette, moons, houses, trees and wood grain characterize the work. These symbols build both an outer world and an inner world, simultaneously reflecting the landscape of my home in Wisconsin as they point towards themes of interiority and metamorphosis. Relying on an archetypal visual language that freely oscillates between figuration and abstraction, each construction is a souvenir from a mental landscape, embodying part of the foundational physical mystery that exists in the paradoxical relationship between observation and perception.
