Statement
I use figuration as a way to explore psychology, societal expectations, and culture from a feminist perspective. I use the portrait as a vehicle for inventing characters that are in conversation with age-old archetypes, composited from personal history, mythology, and science fiction. These oil pastel drawings are explorations for new, larger works and primarily depict women together in some scenario that speculates as to the narrative conditions: the where, when, why, and who. Through the gesture, placement, and proximity of the participants, there is subtle humour, tenderness, and social commentary rendered in quirky colour and palpable texture.
