Statement
My work delves into the complexities of an ambivalent relationship with the tradition of Western Art. As someone who hails from the Western part of the United States, a cultural landscape that often rejects European high culture, I explore the absurdity of being both a product of and an outlier within this tradition.
My exposure to art before adulthood was in the form of reproductions. On screens and in books, images of art objects have been deprived of their context, rendering them ambiguous. These images existed alongside cartoons and advertisements, cultural products more familiar than European art.
I hope to provide a playful respite from the class signification assigned to artworks in the European tradition. Such a practice is itself, ironically, a Western tradition stemming from the 20th century. This dialectic of insider/outsider cannot be escaped and is thus converted into a productive tension. My art becomes a reflection on the humorous contradictions, inviting viewers to question, challenge, and engage with the influences that shape our artistic perspectives.
