These small drawings were done while visiting Rome and represent some early research into the palmette and other decorative motifs found throughout the city. The baroque impulse, so evident in the city, leaves every touch point decorated with a flourish. This overstimulated world reflects a psychological space I find myself in when I’m drawing.
The origin of the palmette is the botanical world, it’s longevity and ubiquity as a decorative motif has allowed it to become may things, animal, vegetable, and mineral. They have further morphed as I have repetitively used these symmetrical radiating forms in my larger drawings. They create their own decorative language of sensation. In these early drawings I’m capturing the logic of these forms of decoration.
